President Donald Trump has no plans to pardon himself, his lawyer Rudy Giuliani said.

Giuliani told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Monday night, despite Trump's earlier tweet that said he has the authority to issue a pardon to himself, he will not do it.

"I can tell you as a lawyer, the pardon power is complete and there is no limitation on it," Giuliani said. "Would somebody impose a practical limitation on it? Absolutely. The practical limitation is it would be suicide to pardon yourself. Absolute suicide.

"It's not gonna happen. And pardon doesn't get you off impeachment, so you can't pardon yourself from an impeachment. He's not gonna pardon himself."

As the Department of Justice investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia continues into its second year, Trump insisted Monday morning he can pardon anyone — including himself.

The comments sparked a fierce debate about whether a president can pardon himself. Attorney and law professor Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV it is unclear if that power exists for a sitting president. He added, since a president cannot be prosecuted for any crimes while in office, a self pardon would not come into play.
