Former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele said Friday that "the evidence is incontrovertible" that President Donald Trump is racist after reports of the president’s comments about Haiti and African nations.
When asked on MSNBC’s “Live with Hallie Jackson,” if he believes Trump is a racist, Steele responded: "Yeah, I do. At this point … the evidence is controvertible."
He added that Trump uses race like a tool "to move people emotionally to a space where he wants them to be to get a reaction out of them."
"There are a whole lot of folks like Donald Trump," Steele said. "White folks in this country who have a problem with the browning of America. … When they talk about [wanting] their country back, they are talking about a country that was very safely white, less brown and less committed to that browning process."
Trump on Friday morning denied that he denigrated Haitians, but made no comment on whether he said anything derogatory in reference to unnamed African countries as reported on Thursday.
