Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul is urging President Donald Trump and other world leaders to "reject" Vladimir Putin's "disinformation" tactics that aim to "silence" critics.

McFaul, a vocal Putin critic who has called out human rights abuses and authoritarian behavior, had been on a list of U.S. citizens the Russian government wanted to question for alleged crimes in exchange for U.S. access to 12 Russians indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller. Trump had praised the deal initially before rejecting it amid a firestorm of criticism.

In a tweet Sunday, McFaul dismissed Putin's accusations against him, saying "of course I broke no law."

The two leaders are expected to meet this fall in Washington, D.C., which has generated another wave of criticism of Trump.
