Americans widely disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of his summit with Russia's Vladimir Putin, as 50 percent disapproves and just 33 percent approves, according to The Washington Post/ABC poll released Sunday.

Also, per the poll, a 56 percent majority disapprove of President Trump expressing doubt about the positions of the U.S. intelligence agencies in condemning Russia for meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

"On both questions, those who say they 'strongly disapprove' of Trump's performance outnumber those who say they 'strongly approve' by better than 2 to 1," according to the Post.

The Post notes, however, the findings remain in line with the frequent negative views of the president, and "major events like Helsinki produce only modest changes in his overall standing, if any."

"The findings indicate that while Trump was judged critically for his summit performance, the event has not at this time proved to be a significant turning point in his presidency, despite the sharp criticism he received in the hours and days after the meeting and the multiple efforts by White House officials and the president to clarify his remarks in Helsinki," the Post wrote. "The poll results suggest that overall attitudes toward the president have hardened on both sides."

Among the other findings in the poll:

  • 40 percent believe Trump went "too far" in supporting Putin, while 35 percent believe he handled Putin "about right," and 15 percent believe he did not go far enough to support Putin.
  • Among Democrats, the results were far more polarized: 83 percent Democrats disapproved of Trump's handling of the summit.
  • 66 percent of Republicans approved of the handling, while 87 percent Republicans approve of President Trump's job performance.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted July 16-20 among 1,473 adults with margin of error of 5.5 percentage points.
