Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn said he loves serving the United States and misses serving, but at the end of the day, he's leaving Donald Trump's decisions about any a potential future role up to the candidate.
"He is the guy that's not thinking just about being a president for four years, he's thinking about what is the direction that our country need to go?" Flynn, who has been said to be on Trump's short list of potential running mates, told Fox News' Martha MacCallum on the
"America's Newsroom" program Thursday.
Flynn is on the list of speakers for next week's Republican National Convention, and with Trump to name his running mate on Friday, there has been some speculation that Trump has another role in mind for him, and MacCallum asked him if he would serve as Secretary of Defense.
"I love serving this country and I miss serving this country," Flynn told her. "There are big, big decisions, and I take them seriously."
But he does believe that the country is "not going in the right direction," and "people at our federal level and executive branch are lying to the American public."
"The lack of trust between the federal government and the American citizens of this country is such a wide gap, we have to renew that trust for the people of this country going forward," Flynn continued.
He said he is "unbelievably honored to be in the mix" of potential vice presidential candidates, and insisted that Trump is not making the decision for himself, but out of concern for the United States and a new vision for the country moving forward.
"He will make that tough decision in the next 24 hours or so, and I leave it at that," said Flynn. "I'm honored."
