The front-runner in Mexico's presidential campaign is reportedly readying a Twitter tit-for-tat to answer President Donald Trump's declaration that Mexico is the "most dangerous country in the world."

The former mayor of Mexico City, left-wing populist Andrés Manuel López Obrador, lashed out at the U.S. president for treating Mexico unfairly, The Hill reported, citing Mexico's Reforma newspaper.

"Without disrespecting [Trump], we're going to put him in his place, we're going to make him come to his senses," López Obrador said, the Hill reported. "We're going to respect President Donald Trump, but he's going to have to learn to respect us."

López Obrador also criticized Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto for not standing up to Trump, saying "with us, it's different."

"Every time [Trump] does what he did today, he'll have a direct response, it's not that I'll send word with the foreign secretary," López Obrador said, the Hill reported. "No. He uses his Twitter, his Face[book], I will use it too, and then I'll send him word of what I think. If he doesn't touch us and he respects us, there won't be a problem."

According to the Hill, the two-time Mexican presidential runner-up joined the social media platform in October 2009, seven months after Trump, and has tweeted 3,496 times. Trump has posted 36,800 times.
