Enthusiasm is "through the roof" for President Donald Trump's first campaign rally since the coronavirus pandemic began, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel declared Monday, after he tweeted that almost a million tickets for the Tulsa event have already been requested.
"It is higher than we've ever seen," McDaniel said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom," pointing out that a record $14 million was raised for the campaign Sunday for his birthday.
"Now we are seeing it with this rally, and that is something that is being underrepresented in these polls," said McDaniel, adding that even though the Bank of Oklahoma Center, which will house the rally Saturday, holds 19,000 there will be several events outside the arena as well.
McDaniel, when addressing the concerns about COVID-19 in connection with the rally, including with the Tulsa World newspaper asking organizers to reconsider the Trump campaign event, said that Republicans are allowing people to make the decisions about their own health.
"Democrats are saying we are going to shut down our state, not going to allow you to make decisions for yourself and your own health, and I think we are far enough along now that people with underlying conditions are not going to go to a rally like this, people will bring masks if they feel like it's necessary," said McDaniel, while complaining that more scrutiny has been brought on the Tulsa event than has been concerning the crowds protesting after the George Floyd killing.
"I am not planning the event, so we will hear from the campaign how that is going, but I think masks will be optional and people will be able to wear them if they bring them or want them," said McDaniel. "The American people can make decisions for themselves. We are all pretty informed at this point."
