During the first quarter of the year, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., raised almost $2 million dollars for his upcoming reelection bid, repo
rts the Hill.
The Senate Minority leader came up with $1.8 million in the first three months of 2013, giving him approximately $8.6 million cash on hand to propel his campaign.
Democrats believe McConnell can be taken out in 2014, due to numbers in polls that show low approval ratings both in Kentucky and nationwide.
Whoever challenges him will have to dig deep financially – McConnell spent more than $20 million in his 2008 bid, and has made it known he’s willing to exceed that figure to defend the seat.
Democrats have yet to get behind a candidate which, according to Kentucky Democratic strategist Danny Briscoe, is giving McConnell a wide-open field when it comes to raising funds.
“Without an opponent, nobody else is raising money,” Briscoe said.
“He's got the whole universe to himself.”
