Veteran Democratic Rep. Edward Markey leads GOP political novice Gabriel Gomez by only 4 percentage points – 44 to 40 percent – among likely voters in the Massachusetts Senate race, according to a new poll.
Gomez is smashing Markey among independents, 47 to 31 percent. Gomez leads among Republicans 70 to 17 percent. Markey leads among Democrats 68 to 21 percent, the
Public Policy Polling survey shows.
Gomez starts out the race on the right foot, with 41 percent of voters holding a favorable opinion of him, and 27 percent holding an unfavorable opinion.
Even among Democrats, 33 percent hold a favorable opinion of Gomez and 32 percent an unfavorable one. Among independents it's 42 percent favorable, 24 percent unfavorable. And among Republicans, it's 60 percent favorable, 22 percent unfavorable.
For Markey, 44 percent of voters overall have a favorable view of him and 41 percent unfavorable.
The two men each won primaries on Tuesday. The poll was taken on Wednesday and Thursday.
The election for the Senate seat previously held by Secretary of State John Kerry is scheduled for June 25.
