A former top aide of 2008 GOP presidential nominee John McCain – who now declares
he'll support Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump – thinks the presumptive nominee will come unglued before November.
In an interview on Politico's "Off Message" podcast, Mark Salter asserts Trump will lose it when he realizes he can't beat Clinton.
"He’s going to lose, and I think he’s got kind of an unstable personality to begin with," Salter says. "I think he could come apart, you know, in some kind of visible way. I think that's quite possible. ... I'm not a psychiatrist, but there is something wrong with [the] guy."
But Salter confesses despite his tweeted support for the Democratic front-runner, "I’m sure 10 minutes into Hillary Clinton’s inaugural address I’ll sort of be disappointed" – and would jump if a good third-party candidate came along.
Asked if there's anything Trump could do to change his mind, Salter says "he’d have to have a brain transplant" – but in a reply to whether McCain's vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, "opened the door a crack for a Trump-type candidate," Salter concedes: "Maybe. Maybe a little."
