Mark Salter, a senior adviser to GOP Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, said Tuesday he's willing to vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump if the businessman wins his party's nomination.
Salter tweeted his thoughts after Trump on Tuesday morning attacked rival Ted Cruz by quoting a National Enquirer article claiming Cruz's father, Rafael, was involved in the JFK assassination.
The war of words has been accelerating between Cruz and Trump in recent days in the run-up to Tuesday's Indiana primary. In an appearance Tuesday morning on "Fox & Friends,"
Trump said of Cruz's father,
"I mean, what was he doing — what was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death? Before the shooting? It's horrible."
Cruz shot back that
Trump is a "pathological liar" and "serial philanderer."
When the media began focusing on Cruz's reaction to Trump, Salter questioned why their reporting didn't go after Trump's claim that Rafael Cruz participated in the Kennedy assassination.
Salter isn't new to his dislike of Trump. He wrote a scathing essay
for Esquire in January on all the reasons he believes Republicans should reject him.
