Republican Rep. Frank Giunta of New Hampshire is on even more shaky ground now that there are calls from the delegation in his own state for his resignation.

New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte said Monday that Giunta should resign in the wake of the news from the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) that he accepted illegal contributions from his family to the tune of $381,000, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

"Congressman Guinta must make his own decision about whether to resign, but if I were in his position, that’s what I would do," Ayotte said.

In addition, other politicians and party leaders from the Granite State are also calling for Giunta to resign, including the New Hampshire House speaker, Senate president and the state GOP chair.

"While I have long have been a supporter of Congressman Guinta, it has become quite clear in recent days that his documentation and explanation of the source of his campaign contributions, and the accounting of any taxes that may have been paid, simply don’t add up," said House Speaker Shawn Jasper, the Union Leader reports.

"As a result, the congressman should do what I believe would be in the best interest of the people of the First Congressional District and step down from his position in the United States Congress."

The Union Leader stated in an editorial that Giunta is no longer "credible" after he said that the money was really his but that he was just keeping it in his parents' bank account.

"When others questioned his story, he attacked their character and lied about the investigation," the Union leader wrote. "His disgraceful behavior has shattered the trust placed in him by the people of New Hampshire."

"The only action he can take now to salvage any sliver of a good name for himself is resignation. He should do it immediately."
