Former President Donald Trump is trailing Vice President Kamala Harris by 30 points among young adult voters, according to a U.S. News/Generation Lab survey conducted Aug. 25 to Sept. 3.
Harris' lead when pitted against Trump is 12 points higher than President Joe Biden's was in July when he was still the Democratic nominee, reports The Hill.
Among adults ages 18-34 in the key battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio, Harris leads Trump 65% to 35%.
"Our poll shows that younger Americans are with Vice President Harris and [Minnesota] Governor [Tim] Walz in several of the swing states that will tip the balance of power — and many intend to voice their support at the voting booth in November," Dafna Linzer, editorial director and executive vice president at U.S. News, said in a press release.
Linzer said national polls show a tight race between the two candidates, but "support is clearly growing for the Democratic ticket among this key voting bloc."
Harris holds 70% of the vote among young women and 60% among young men, including the support of 94% of young Democrats compared to Trump's 86% support among young Republicans. Harris carries the support of independents 70% to Trump's 30%.
"Harris' youth lead was already stronger than Biden's when he dropped out, but now, she's flirting with Obama-level youth vote numbers," Generation Lab CEO Cyrus Beschloss told U.S. News & World Report.
"The question will be how much she can defy electoral gravity, and get those supporters to actually show up," Beschloss said.
The online poll of approximately 2,000 respondents carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.
