John Edwards Could Owe $2.3M to Feds

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards could be in debt to the government for about $2.3 million from his failed 2008 campaign. A Federal Election Commission (FEC) audit has concluded that the Edwards campaign received more than $2.1 million in matching funds that it wasn't entitled to get and has nearly $142,000 in checks that donors who were refunded their donations never cashed, according to a report by USA TODAY.

Edwards ended his run for the White House in January 2008, but he has continued spending an average of $60,000 a month in federal matching money, public money and money from contributors.

The FEC is recommending the Edwards campaign repay the money to the federal government.

A federal grand jury recently indicted Edwards on six felony charges related to money that was used to cover up his affair and child with Rielle Hunter, a videographer who work on his 2008 presidential campaign.

Federal prosecutors allege Edwards accepted $900,000 in contributions from heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon and Texas banker Fred Barron, filing false campaign finance reports to hide the donations.
