Ohio Gov. John Kasich tells The Weekly Standard he is estranged from the Republican Party because of its direction under the Trump administration.
"I just don't support the current agenda: the anti-immigrant, anti-trade, not worried about debt — I don't like any of that. Is that temporary? I don't know," Kasich tells the conservative opinion magazine in an interview published Monday.
Asked about the possibility of a third party being launched to take on Republicans as well as Democrats, Kasich, a former GOP presidential candidate, said: "Rich people that say they've had enough and they're willing to put money into it — that's how it gets started."
Kasich says he is calling for an "awakening" of values.
"I don't want you to go thinking I'm trying to lead some crusade here or something like that," he says. "When I talk about an awakening, I'm talking about sort of a movement of manners and respect … I haven't studied them, but they have happened, right? They have happened throughout human history."
