President Donald Trump's attorney Jay Sekulow criticized former FBI Director James Comey for potentially leaking classified information, telling Fox & Friends on Tuesday that at a minimum he gave out information about a conversation with the president in violation of the criminal code.
"It was covered by executive privilege," he said. "And James Comey ignored that when he illegally . . . distributed that information for one purpose only: to get a special prosecutor. He gets a special prosecutor based on illegally leaked information. What does that tell you about the whole basis for this special counsel?"
Sekulow said the public should eventually discover if any of the information Comey leaked was classified, because it has been turned over to special counsel Robert Mueller and the congressional committees that are conducting their own Russia investigations also will ask for it.
Sekulow also defended Donald Trump Jr. over his controversial meeting with a Russian lawyer connected to the Kremlin during the campaign in hopes of obtaining unflattering information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
He mocked The New York Times report on it, saying "In campaigns, guess what, there's opposition research that becomes available sometimes . . . A meeting takes place and we're making like this is some huge international event. Hundreds of meetings take place in campaigns."
Sekulow also emphasized that "No one has pointed to me where there's a legal violation of a meeting with a Russian lawyer that involved the campaign."
When asked why those involved in the Trump campaign didn't just reveal all their connections with Russians, knowing that this could become an issue if kept secret, Sekulow dismissed the concern, saying this meeting was "no issue anyways."
