Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., took aim at President Donald Trump and Republicans over briefings about a confidential FBI intelligence source in the Russia investigation.

Democrats were not invited to the first briefing, "because this is a charade," Speier said Thursday on CNN's "New Day."

"This is a paranoid president who is calling the shots who believes that he will get more traction, he will be able to undermine the Mueller investigation by identifying this as 'Spygate,'" Speier said.

Reps. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., will be in the first meeting, then the full "Gang of Eight" bipartisan group of lawmakers will be in the second, The Washington Post reported.

The addition of the second briefing happened after criticism from Democrats that the White House had only offered the meeting to Republicans, The Post reported.

Trump and his allies have made the confidential FBI source a part of their latest criticism of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, alleging that the FBI planted a spy in the Trump campaign for political reasons.

The source, Stefan A. Halper, is a former University of Cambridge professor and a veteran of past Republican administrations, The Post reported.
