Senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump on Wednesday encountered criticism after tweeting a picture of herself holding a can of Goya-brand black beans after the company’s CEO praised her father, President Donald Trump.
“If it’s Goya, it has to be good,” Ivanka Trump tweeted, along with the Spanish translation: “Si es Goya, tiene que ser bueno.”
The New York Times’ chief White House correspondent Peter Baker tweeted shortly after Ivanka Trump’s post: “Federal ethics law: ‘An employee shall not use or permit the use of his Government position or title or any authority associated with his public office to endorse any product, service or enterprise ...”
Goya CEO Robert Unanue said last week that “We’re all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder,” according to Talking Points Memo.
Goya, one of the largest American producers of Latin American and Spanish foods, is now the subject of an attempted boycott led by Hispanic Democrats such as former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., which Unanue said was attempted “suppression of speech.”
