President Donald Trump tweeted adoration for Goya Foods a day after Goya CEO Robert Unanue visited the White House.
“I LOVE @GoyaFoods!” Trump tweeted.
Unanue on Thursday during a speech in the Rose Garden said the U.S. was "truly blessed ... to have a leader like Trump who is a builder."
The compliment was followed by a wave of criticism toward Unanue and Goya Foods by liberals who shunned him for crediting the president.
"@GoyaFoods has been a staple of so many Latino households for generations," Julian Castro, former housing secretary under President Barack Obama, tweeted. "Now their CEO, Bob Unanue, is praising a president who villainizes and maliciously attacks Latinos for political gain. Americans should think twice before buying their products."
“Oh look, it’s the sound of me Googling “how to make your own Adobo,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., tweeted.
Republicans defended Goya Foods, calling the onslaught of criticism the latest wave of “cancel culture.”
“Goya is a staple of Cuban food. My grandparents ate Goya black beans twice a day for nearly 90 years. And now the Left is trying to cancel Hispanic culture and silence free speech. #BuyGoya,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted.
"I am going to the grocery store to stock up on Goya Foods products. Who’s with me?" Ryan Fournier, Founder and Co-Chairman of Students For Trump, tweeted.
