Sen. Lindsey Graham on Sunday said the upper chamber should vote on a bill to protect special counsel Robert Mueller — but warned it’d be “counterproductive” to tie it to a must-pass spending bill.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the South Carolina Republican urged passage of legislation he co-sponsored with Sens. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C. that would codify Justice Department rules requiring that a special counsel only be fired for good cause.
“I think the best thing the Senate could do is just bring this bill to the floor and vote on it,” he said.
But to suggestions the bill should be tied to passage of a government spending bill, as some Democrats have urged, Graham said “Once you get into that kind of stuff, it never ends and it might actually be counterproductive.”
Graham also said he didn’t think Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker is necessarily the best choice for a permanent successor to ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
"I have nothing against him,” Graham said. “I don't know if he is the best choice. … There are a lot of good names out there. I would just encourage the president to start 2019, as soon as we can, with a new attorney general that he has confidence in, and we can get confirmed."
