Republicans have lost several "top-tier candidates" for Senate — and it may be the result of President Donald Trump's "historically weak" start in the White House, The Hill reports.
Reps. Sean Duffy of Wisconsin and Pat Meehan of Pennsylvania say they will run for reelection and Susan Brook of Indiana is declining to run.
The reason could be Trump, speculates Kyle Kondik, managing editor of the influential politics blog Sabato's Crystal Ball.
"The House [members] are generally pretty politically savvy people. They know midterms are often — not always — bad for the president's party. Trump is off to a historically weak start in terms of his approval," Kendrick told The Hill.
"You got a lot of members of the House who are in relatively safe seats. Maybe they're making the determination that this might not best year to run for Senate."
Kondik also said some lawmakers may wait and assess the nation's political temperature in a few months.
