Gomez, GOP Launch $400K Ad Blitz in Massachusetts Senate Race

By    |   Tuesday, 04 June 2013 11:04 AM EDT

Republicans are spending heavily in true-blue Massachusetts in the belief that Senate candidate Gabriel Gomez can wrest John Kerry's old seat away from the Democrats.

Gomez and the Massachusetts Republican Party have bought more than $400,000 in TV ads this week to put toward the Bay State Senate race.

They will spend a combined total of $411,000 on airtime in the Boston and Springfield markets, Politico reports. It brings the total ad spending supporting Gomez to $800,000.

The ads will begin airing Wednesday, the same day that Gomez and his opponent, Democratic Rep. Ed Markey, are due to have their first debate in the run-up to the June 25 vote.

The GOP believes Gomez could spring the same sort of surprise victory that Scott Brown had in the Bay State in 2009's special Senate election. Brad Dayspring, communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has said that the Massachusetts race is "clearly winnable" for the GOP.
