Georgia Democrats Scramble for Senate Candidate

By    |   Wednesday, 08 May 2013 06:01 PM EDT

Georgia Democrats were clearly disappointed with the announcement of centrist Rep. John Barrow last week that he would not seek the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

Barrow, who won re-election as Mitt Romney was sweeping the Peach State's 12th District with 56 percent of the vote, was clearly the best Democratic hope of capturing the Senate seat that three Republican House members are vying for so far.

At this point, the next-best-thing for Democrats is a bid by Michelle Nunn, Atlanta businesswoman and head of a non-profit foundation. Although she has never sought office before, Nunn carries one of Georgia's most revered names as the daughter of former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn, who served from 1972 to 1997.
