Some House Republicans facing tough re-election bids in 2014 reported less than stellar fundraising results in the first quarter, according to filings Monday with the Federal Election Commission.
Democrats, on the other hand, did a lot better, according to
The Hill.
“This should be a wake-up call to Republican members,” one GOP strategist told Capitol Hill newspaper, adding: “They need to step it up if they want to keep the majority and keep [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., out of the Speaker’s chair.”
California GOP Reps. Gary Miller and David Valadao, both of whom face tough campaigns in Democratic-leaning districts, each raised less than $100,000 for the quarter, according to The Hill. Miller reportedly has $415,000 in the bank, while Valadao has less than $140,000.
Michigan Rep. Kerry Bentivolio, another Republican expected to be at risk next year, raised just over $40,000 and has just $36,000 in hand.
Meanwhile, Florida Rep. Steve Southerland reportedly brought in just over $40,000, while New York Rep. Richard Hanna raised less than $30,000.
There were a few major success stories, though, for Republicans. Rep. Tom Latham of Iowa, a close ally of House Speaker John Boehner, raked in more than $300,000 during the quarter. Rep. Rodney Davis of Illinois brought in more than $400,000, and Rep. Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania topped $300,000, according to The Hill.
There were some Democrats who didn't fare well. But they still managed to out-raise Republicans. The included Rep. Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire, who brought in less than $90,000; Rep. Mike McIntyre of North Carolina with $120,000; and Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia, who took in just $140,000.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee also raised more than the National Republican Congressional Committee, posting $7.6 million to its accounts by the end of February compared to $4.4 million for the GOP group.
