House Democrats unveiled "For the People" as their midterm campaign slogan in a private meeting with members Wednesday, Politico reported.
House Democrats plan to start using the phrase in their statements, especially those touching on the topics of health care and prescription drug costs; increasing wages through infrastructure and public works projects; and emphasizing Republican corruption in Washington.
"We have 110 days from right now until Election Day, and we will be spending the month of August in our home districts, and we wanted to make sure we are singing from the same song sheet on the three top issues," said Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., co-chair of House Democrats' messaging arm.
Bustos acknowledged "I don't think any of us are claiming this is poetic or this is the end-all-be-all of messaging," explaining "It's just a way, in a quick way, to put together the answer to what we stand for."
Democrats have found it difficult to agree on a common message since the 2016 election, as centrists and liberals have fought for the party's identity.
Many in the party disliked and even openly mocked last year's rollout of the party's "Better Deal" slogan.
However, Democrats appear to be in their best position in many years to regain control of the House due to an energized anti-Trump base wanting a check on the president and the fact midterms traditionally favor the party not in control of the White House.
Democratic sources who attended Wednesday's meeting said this year's presentation of the slogan went over well, but, apparently due to the fiasco last year, the party intends to keep attention over it low key.
