Rookie Montana Republican Rep. Steve Daines is to announce next week that he will run for the Senate next year, for the seat now held by Democrat Max Baucus.
"We fully expect him to announce his intentions about the Senate race on Wednesday," a Montana Republican with knowledge of Daines' plans
told The Hill.
Daines is holding a "special event" Nov. 6 in his hometown of Bozeman to "thank supporters," according to an invitation secured by The Hill. His spokeswoman Alee Lockman wouldn't reveal whether an announcement about a Senate bid would come at the event, The Hill reports.
Daines is Montana's only congressman. He replaced seven-term Rep. Denny Rehberg when Rehberg made an unsuccessful bid for the Senate in November last year only to lose to Democrat Jon Tester 49 percent to 45 percent.
Baucus is retiring next year after 36 years in the Senate. Montana's Lt. Gov. John Walsh is the
likely Democratic nominee.
