Republican voters in New York State have said for the first time since Gov. Andrew Cuomo took office two years ago that they disapprove of his performance, according to
a new poll released Tuesday.
The Quinnipiac University survey found that while Democratic approval of the governor is still high at 69 percent, Republicans disapprove of the job he is doing by a margin of 49 percent to 38 percent.
Cuomo’s overall approval rating now stands at 55 percent, sharply down from its peak of 74 percent in December 2012. Twenty-seven percent of voters now disapprove of his performance.
Cuomo’s once-sky high bipartisan approval apparently took a hit from his drive for tougher gun control, with 59 percent of Republicans disapproving of his strict new gun law.
“His first-in-the-nation move for gun control hurt Cuomo with Republicans and independent voters,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, noting that the state was split geographically, with voters upstate disapproving heavily of the way he handled the gun issue and city voters supporting him even more heavily.
The poll also found that in an early look at a potential 2106 presidential race, New York voters back Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie by a wide margin, 59 percent to 32 percent.
