Sen. Coons: Biden 'Sounded Alarm' On Coronavirus

By    |   Sunday, 23 August 2020 12:18 PM EDT

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said Sunday it was Joe Biden who “sounded the alarm” about the coronavirus as it spread from China throughout the globe.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Coons, a surrogate for the Democratic presidential nominee, pushed back on President Donald Trump’s assertions that Biden is “soft” on China — and never mentioned it during the Democratic National Convention.

“It was Joe Biden who sounded the alarm bells about this virus,” Coons said.

“You can't simply blame China as a way to get our country out of this pandemic and the recession and chaos that resulted,” he added.

Coons also defended Biden’s remark that he would, if his public health advisers recommended, shut down the country if there was COVID-19 resurgence.

“What he said is he will listen to science,” Coons said, “something Donald Trump has failed to do.”

“If public health officials say that’s the only way, he’s saying he’ll do it,” Coons added.

Coons also asserted that sending federal agents into Portland, Ore., in response to violence and daily demonstration helped accelerate the unrest.

“Sending in federal law enforcement… wasn’t asked for or wanted,” he said, adding, that it “helped accelerate violent demonstrations and riots... simply made it worse.”
