Pennsylvania voters are statistically evenly divided on who they are supporting for president in 2020, according to a new poll.
A Muhlenberg College/Morning Call election poll released Friday indicates that President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are in a statistical tie in the state, with Biden holding a narrow lead.
Poll results show:
- 49% of likely voters in Pennsylvania say they will back Biden for president.
- 45% of likely voters in Pennsylvania say they will vote to reelect Trump.
- 46% of the Keystone state's voters view Biden unfavorably.
- 51% of likely voters in the state say they view Trump unfavorably.
- 51% of likely voters in Pennsylvania say they disapprove of the job Trump is doing.
- 53% of the state's likely voters say they don't believe Trump should be reelected.
Trump won the state's 20 electoral votes in 2016. He could face more of a challenge repeating a win in the state because Biden is from Pennsylvania. Trump hit the campaign trail on Thursday and delivered a speech outside Biden's hometown of Scranton, ripping the former vice president.
Even amid the coronavirus pandemic and the economic hardship that has followed, only 10% of likely voters in Pennsylvania reported that their financial situation is worse than it was before Trump took office, according to the poll results. Forty percent of people polled said their financial situation is better now.
"Given the current unemployment levels, we expected some shifts in these numbers," said Chris Borick, director of Muhlenberg's Institute for Public Opinion. "We know many people's economic standing has suffered during the coronavirus pandemic crisis. I believe voters are appraising their economic situation not so much in the moment but rather over the span of Trump's presidency."
The poll surveyed 416 likely voters in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania between Aug. 11- 17. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 5.5%.
