Republican Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado is releasing a video in which he expresses an opinion on Donald Trump contrary to his own party.
"Honestly, I don't care for him much," he says in a television commercial.
Politico reports that this is the first time a House Republican has gone on record as being against Trump in paid campaign advertising.
In Coffman's video, he also makes clear that he is not a Hillary Clinton supporter. "I certainly don't trust Hillary."
The Colorado lawmaker served in Iraq as a Marine, and says that means he supports his country first. If Trump is elected president, he promises to "stand up to him" and "if Hillary wins, I'll hold her accountable, every step of the way."
Coffman's video arrives at a time when Republicans are concerned about Trump's effect on races down the ballot. It's possible, Politico reported, that other Republicans could take Coffman's lead and also come out against Trump, in order to help their own reelection chances.
Coffman also reached out to Hispanic voters by releasing a version of his commercial in which he speaks Spanish.
This isn't the first time Coffman has criticized Trump. The New York Times reported he slammed Trump's comments about the Khan family and their son, a deceased war hero.
"Having served in Iraq, I'm deeply offended when Donald Trump fails to honor the sacrifices of all of our brave soldiers who were lost in that war," Coffman said.
Latino Democrats in Colorado had a different view of Coffman in March, blaming him for the rise of Trump and his "racist" platform, according to the Colorado Independent. Coffman had supported Marco Rubio for president, but at the time had not made public his stance on Trump.
