Poll: Hillary Clinton Clear Leader in Presidential Poll

By    |   Thursday, 02 May 2013 07:44 PM EDT

Hillary Clinton has a huge lead in a field of possible Democratic presidential contenders, a new poll shows.

The former secretary of state garnered the support of 65 percent of those surveyed in a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday. Vice President Joe Biden was a distant second with 13 percent support.

Other possible Democratic contenders were in the single digits. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had 4 percent, and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner each had 1 percent or less.

However, when Clinton was not given as an option Biden was the breakaway favorite with 45 percent, Cuomo got 15 percent, Patrick 6 percent, O'Malley 3 percent, and Warner 2 percent.

"Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a rock-solid hold on the hearts of Democratic voters at this point," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said of the poll results. "If she decides not to run, Vice President Joseph Biden does almost as well as she does against the rest of the field."

Admitting that the 2016 elections are a long way off, Brown said the younger potential condenders have nowhere near the voter support as Clinton and Biden.

The poll talked to 1,471 registered voters April 25-29. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
