Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., is taking on a style similar to President Donald Trump in her efforts toward re-election in her New York district, The Hill reported.
Tenney has taken aim at the media. "Some are better than others. I do think the single biggest destructive force in our country is the media. We've lost our way."
About Democrats, Tenney said, "They don't love our country."
Her New York district is 91 percent white, with a college graduation rate of 24 percent, and Trump won there easily in the 2016 election, the Hill reported.
In an interview outside the House chamber, the Hill reported that Tenney said she was supporting her community, not Trump. "Many of the things that Trump stands for are issues that are consistent with why he won by such a large margin in our district."
"There are times when he makes me cringe, but he's not a politician. He is very instinctual, he's very earnest," Tenney said about Trump.
"The environment will be different in each race, but Tenney has done a smart job of delivering the constituents on local issues, and standing with the president when it helps her district. That's pretty smart politics from where I sit," said GOP consultant Chris Grant.
The Cook Political Report says Tenney's race is a tossup.
Her opponent, Democratic assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, has raised more funds than Tenney, the Hill reported. Tenney has tied Brindisi to "San Francisco liberal," Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the House minority leader.
The congresswoman in February stirred controversy when she said that many mass shooters "end up being Democrats."
