Sen. Claire McCaskill says she's picked the perfect vice presidential running mate for Donald Trump — Todd Akin, the disgraced politician whose crack about "legitimate rape" wrecked his career.
"I figured out who Donald Trump's vice president should be … [and] he, at least, learned how to apologize. He's got political experience — that would be Todd Akin," the Missouri Democrat quipped to hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski Thursday on MSNBC's
"Morning Joe."
The conversation starts at 5:20 minutes.
In 2012, McGaskill unseated Akin — an anti-abortion advocate who had been in office since 2001 — after his startling response to a question about pregnancy terminations for victims of rape.
"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said, triggering outrage around the world with its implication that rape victims who did become pregnant were liars.
Trump has also set off fireworks when commenting on abortion.
In March, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee said there should be "some form" of punishment for women seeking abortions if the practice was ever banned. He later said he meant that women should "punish themselves."
"[Akin is] the perfect vice president. The perfect vice president for Donald Trump," McGaskill said.
