FBI director Christopher Wray left more questions than answers regarding allegations that the FBI may have been used for political purposes during his Thursday appearance on Capitol Hill, a GOP congresswoman said.
Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Fox News she and her constituents are concerned over the prospect that the FBI — and other federal agencies, for that matter — can be weaponized politically.
"I think that there is deep concern that the FBI may have been used in a political way, and getting to the bottom of what happened with the DNC and Fusion GPS and then this dossier and how this thing was concocted and if it was used for a FISA warrant, this is something people want to know," Blackburn said, referencing a scandalous dossier with unverified claims about President Donald Trump that was put together during the presidential campaign.
"I think . . . you have to say [Americans] are reserving judgment, but at this point they feel they have reason to be skeptical and we're hearing a lot about it on the correspondence with our constituents."
Reports say the FBI may have used the aforementioned dossier to obtain a FISA warrant, which granted the bureau permission to spy on certain members of the Trump team before he took office.
Lawmakers are demanding answers. Wray was asked about the topic in front of the House Judiciary committee Thursday.
Blackburn brought up the case of Lois Lerner, a former IRS official who was accused of targeting conservative groups.
"Look at what transpired with the IRS. When they were used to target political appointments and now you have Lois Lerner saying we want to forever seal our testimony because we're afraid of what it would say," Blackburn said. "And people are saying, could that same type of political activity that was used over there, could that have been used through another agency that we depend on to help keep our nation safe?"
