New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has slammed a proposal to legalize marijuana in the Garden State, saying to do so would be like delivering "poison" to its residents.

"[It's] beyond stupidity," Christie, a Republican, said Monday at a substance abuse and mental health conference in Princeton, The Bergen Record reports.

"We are in the midst of a public health crisis on opiates and we have people saying, 'Yeah, but the pot's OK.'"

Christie said the legislation, sponsored by three state Democrats – Sens. Nick Scutari and Stephen Sweeney, and gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy -- would bring "poison"’ to New Jersey if it is passed and recreational marijuana goes on sale.

"I don't know what these people think. … This is nothing more than crazy liberals who want to say everything is OK; people should be able to choose. Baloney," Christie said, according to the newspaper.

Eight states and Washington, D.C., now allow the use of recreational marijuana. The states are Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada.
