The Senate healthcare proposal does not bail out insurance companies, according to Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.
"Not a penny of this can go to the profits of the insurance companies. And frankly, if President [Donald] Trump has a better idea of how to write this bill, we've sort of said, 'well, go for it,'" Van Hollen said Thursday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," according to The Washington Times.
The new proposal is a bipartisan deal sponsored by Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. The president on Wednesday said he opposed the legislation because it provided "bailouts to insurance companies."
Van Hollen also expressed his support for the bipartisan deal in a Wednesday post on his Facebook page.
"I strongly support this agreement and hope it will gain sufficient Republican support in the Senate and House to pass," Van Hollen wrote.
