Former Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., said that Republicans who say they are pro-life yet also support family separations on the border are a "real contradiction."
“It’s pretty hard to get awfully sanctimonious on the pro-life issue while you’re witnessing children being separated from their parents and their families," Dent said Monday on CNN’s "New Day."
“That’s an irony and a real contradiction. It’s pretty hard to go out there and wave the flag of being pro-family while watching these families be torn apart,” Dent said.
"But then, you can just fall back and say, 'Hey, I’m pro-life, that makes it all better.' Well, it really doesn’t," Dent said in the interview.
The Democratic base will become energized in support of immigrants, just as they are over the appointment of a new Supreme Court justice, Dent said.
"It’s going to be a wild fall. Let’s face it, when you’re out of power, and you’re losing all your issues, you’re just angrier, you’re more motivated," Dent said.
"All of these issues are simply stoke up Democratic turnout in the midterms," Dent said in the CNN interview.
Dent resigned from Congress in May. He decided to retire from office partly because of President Donald Trump, he said in December. "In my case, I’d say the president was a factor but not the factor for me deciding to leave," Dent said at the time.
