Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., said his decision to retire from Congress after his current term is partially because of President Donald Trump.

Dent began serving in Congress in 2005, but is not running for re-election in 2018. On Thursday during an appearance on CNN, he discussed his reasons for stepping away from politics.

"In my case, I'd say the president was a factor but not the factor for me deciding to leave," Dent said. "I had been thinking about leaving Congress since 2013, ever since the [government] shutdown I thought it might be time to move on, and those are part of my reasons."

Dent noted that Trump's polarizing nature will not make it easy for Republicans running in the 2018 midterm elections.

"Certainly, we are in a very challenging mid-term environment. The party of the president typically loses about 32 seats in a midterm like this. I think most of my colleagues are well aware of the historical challenges that we face," he said.

"Then Donald Trump complicates that because he's a very polarizing figure, and so I suspect our challenges will be even greater just because of that."

Dent is one of several Republicans who are not seeking re-election next year. Others include Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Rep. Jimmy Duncan Jr., R-Tenn., Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., and Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va.
