Two weeks after the Border Patrol union endorsed Donald Trump for president, some of its members would like to see their local chapter refuse it.
According to the
El Paso Times, agents part of the 1,700-member Local 1929 chapter of the National Border Patrol Council want to put some distance between themselves and the endorsement.
More than 20 officials, groups, and leaders in the area who are not part of the union support the Local 1929's feelings on the matter.
"We do not believe this endorsement reflect the values of the Border Patrol agents that work in this region," reads one letter signed by El Paso officials, according to the Times. "One of the reasons that El Paso is the safest city in the United States is because of the trust developed between law enforcement and the El Paso community."
The National Border Patrol Council
represents 16,500 Border Patrol agents and said at the end of March it supports Trump's presidential bid.
Trump has made several comments about America's southern border, saying he'd like to build a wall there. He's also
made remarks that many find disparaging toward Mexicans.
El Paso-area leaders say a Trump presidency would damage relationships between the public and the Border Patrol.
The union, however, countered that claim.
"We have all invested a lot of time and energy into our community outreach efforts. However, we must remember that our primary responsibility is to protect the border," National Border Patrol Council spokesman Shawn Moran said.
