Trump on Illegals: 'Somebody's Doing the Raping'

By    |   Wednesday, 01 July 2015 10:49 PM

Donald Trump was challenged by CNN's Don Lemon on Wednesday on the statement that has gotten him into hot water with NBC, Univision and Macy's, but he stood by his words.

The billionaire real estate developer has been under fire ever since he made statements on immigration at his June 16 presidential campaign announcement.

"When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best," Trump said then. "They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

Trump said he wasn't talking about the Mexican people, but illegal immigrants.

"If you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country, they're mind-boggling," Trump said on "CNN Tonight."

Lemon said he had read the statistics, and that they were referring to women being raped who were trying to enter the country, not about criminals coming across the border entering the country.

"Somebody’s doing the raping, Don. I mean, you know, somebody’s doing it," Trump countered. "You say it’s women being raped. Well, who’s doing the raping? Well, how can you say such a thing?"

Despite the controversy, GOP primary voters appear to love Trump. A new CNN/ORC poll shows him in second place behind former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

But that doesn't make Trump happy.

"Because I don’t get it," Trump said. "He's in favor of Common Core. He's very weak on immigration. He thinks people come over for love and I'm not at all happy. I don't understand how he's at first place."

Macy's, he said, folded under pressure when it decided to stop selling his ties.

"That's the problem with our country. Everybody folds under pressure," he said. "Macy's was unable to handle pressure. They folded like dogs."

Appearing earlier on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," Trump said that Macy's decision to stop selling his ties "has no impact on me."

Former NFL star Emmitt Smith is the latest to back out of his association with the Miss USA pageant. Smith was slated to be a judge.

"Who cares? So what?" Trump said of Smith's departure. "We'll get other judges. Judges are easy to get."

Co-hosts Cheryl Burke and Thomas Roberts also have said they will not be involved in the event. It will be streamed online after NBC announced it will not air the pageant.
