Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., who Democrats consider to be a vulnerable candidate in the midterm elections, said she "can't defend" President Donald Trump reportedly calling Haiti, El Salvador and African "sh**hole countries," according to The Hill.
"I can't defend what the president reportedly said. The United States is a nation of immigrants, and our families and forebears have come from all over the world," she said. "This diversity is our strengths and uniquely American.
"What we need now is not division or discord, but finding a way we can come together and agree, as well as civilly disagree, as we tackle our diverse American challenges."
Her statement was posted on Twitter by ABC's Evan McMurry.
The Hill noted Hillary Clinton had defeated Trump by 10 points in Comstock's district in the presidential election — convincing Democrats to target her in the midterm race.
The controversy over Trump's reported remarks erupted following a Washington Post report detailing them on Thursday. They were reportedly said during a meeting with lawmakers.
Trump has denied using the language.
