Dems Target House Districts Won by Trump

By    |   Tuesday, 04 April 2023 10:38 AM EDT

House Democrats' campaign arm is reportedly targeting districts won by former President Donald Trump — an aggressive move signaling their fight to expand the 2024 House map.

The move builds on the 19 districts earmarked by House Democrats' primary super PAC, including six GOP incumbents it sees as particularly weak or vulnerable in safer districts, Axios reported Tuesday.

First revealed by NBC News, the list includes 31 GOP-held seats and two being vacated by Reps. Katie Porter, D-Calif., and Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich — and is a blend of ultra-competitive districts in places like New York's Hudson Valley and Long Island, including the seat held by Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., areas President Joe Biden won, like the seat held by Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., and conservative-leaning districts where the party sees a vulnerable GOP incumbent, such as Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.

Axios noted the list also targets Florida Rep. Paulina Luna and Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry — chair of the Freedom Caucus — as well as Wisconsin Rep. Derrick Van Orden — who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — and Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke, who has faced residency and ethics questions.

According to Axios, Democrats are expecting a victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election Tuesday, which will determine the ideological makeup of the state's top judicial body, and view Wisconsin GOP Rep. Bryan Steil's district as an opportunity.

But some Republicans dismiss the Democrats' strategy as wishful thinking.

For example, Axios reported one GOP strategist working on House races sees Perry, Zinke, Luna, and Reps. Mariannette Miller Meeks of Iowa and Maria Salazar of Florida as solid — and unrealistic targets for Dems.

And National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Jack Pandol was bluntly skeptical.

"Why would voters change their minds [post-2022] after Democrats spent their time in the minority coddling violent criminals and opposing relief," he told the news outlet.
