While the freight rail industry has been under heightened scrutiny after two recent Norfolk Southern derailments – with one of the accidents leading to hazardous, toxic chemicals being unleashed in the Ohio village of East Palestine – federal data indicates that derailments are commonplace with about three incidents per day.

But is that an acceptable rate?
