The coronavirus pandemic combined with the upcoming presidential election and the appointment of a major Republican donor and Trump supporter as the head of the postal system has created the perfect storm of controversy, with congressional Democrats alleging that the postal system is suddenly in crisis.
In truth, while it’s easy to blame President Donald Trump, the U.S. Postal Service has been struggling for at least 12 years. It more than doubled fiscal year 2018’s $3.91 billion net loss, according to MarketWatch.
