ISIS Strikes Back in Syria

The retreat of Kurdish-dominated forces from Arab-majority areas of northeastern Syria after the Trump administration's announcement that it ended support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in favor of the Islamist regime in Damascus has stoked worries about what will happen to the thousands of ISIS prisoners held in prisons across the region.

The U.S.-trained SDF created a formidable counter-ISIS force that developed sophisticated intelligence networks that served to keep the jihadist movement in check in eastern Syria until recently. The ISIS flag could be seen on social media being waved by a supporter at the gate of Raqqa, the former ISIS capital, but those such as Robert Ford, former U.S. ambassador to Syria, cautioned that it appears to have been the action of a lone supporter.
