Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., says the election of 12 Republican women to the House of Representatives is “pushing back on the narrative that (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Party have a monopoly on women.”
Stefanik in 2019 launched E-PAC, a political action committee backing Republican women, following the 2018 midterm elections that saw the House lose 10 female Republican members.
Three of the 12 elected knocked off Democratic incumbents seeking their second terms and, overall, the GOP broke a record by electing the largest number of new Republican women to Congress ever.
“Each of these women represent different districts, they bring different backgrounds, so I don’t think it’s going to be the identity politics of “the squad,” but it does show America that you have a diverse perspective when you think about women voters,” Stefanik said Monday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.”
“The Squad” is the informal name for four women elected to the House in 2018: Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
“What’s important is the Republican party did well among women voters and very well with women candidates, so I think their focus is going to be on strong representation for their districts.”
