Peter Morici: GOP Should Learn From Elizabeth Warren

By    |   Monday, 29 December 2014 05:52 PM

Republicans can learn a valuable lesson by studying the reasons for Sen. Elizabeth Warren's meteoric rise into the national spotlight, says economist Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland.

"Think about it. Elizabeth Warren, before Barack Obama became president, was an oblivious professor at Harvard University. Her only claim to fame was she suggested there would be some sort of consumer, financial consumer protection agency," Morici said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Now she's a U.S. senator with virtually no experience or background for the job. You have all kinds of progressive groups asking her to run for president because even they are scared of Hillary [Clinton].

"The reason she's doing so well is she's hitting on things that do ring true — and that is that the middle class has not profited from this recovery."

That message is nothing new — it's just that Warren has successfully focused on it, according to Morici.

"What she's suggesting is more of the same. The Republicans have their alternatives, but before they can get their alternatives out there . . . they have to convince middle-class voters that they feel their pain," he said.

"That's what Elizabeth Warren does so well. She has people convinced she's listening to the pain of America."

So, what should the GOP zero in on?

"It's time to say this [Keystone XL] pipeline is being held up, it's this many jobs," Morici suggested.

"Do a road show . . . put up photographs . . . of unemployed Americans that would be employed if that pipeline went forward. You have to start getting graphic, you have to start putting a human face on things.

"Somebody has to find a closet to lock in — until after the election — Congressman [Paul] Ryan, because if he comes up with one more voucher program for the elderly …"

Morici told host Steve Malzberg that he'd be glad to tackle America's healthcare issues.

"I mean heck, I'll solve your healthcare problems for you, and it's going to be damn mean. I'm basically going to go to the hospitals, look, this is what it costs to do a hip replacement in Amsterdam, you hit that price mark or you're not getting any federal money," Morici said.

"Even before Obamacare, the federal government was in for quite a bit on healthcare, and they would have to start taking a hard look at why the Germans and the Dutch can deliver healthcare so much more effectively and less expensively than your GP or your local hospital."
