Rep. Peter King on Trump: 'An Equal Opportunity Offender'

By    |   Tuesday, 14 July 2015 03:19 PM EDT

Donald Trump is "an equal opportunity offender" and is unlikely to win the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, Rep. Peter King told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I'm not trashing him. I don't think he should have said it, the way he did. He went too far," King, a New York Republican, said Tuesday, referring to the billionaire developer's remark that some illegal immigrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border are criminals.

"That's the way he talks, though. He's sort of an equal opportunity offender. But he's raising a larger point, which is the illegal immigration issue is out of control, the situation is out of control."

"He used street language to describe it and again he shouldn't have done that, but having said that, it does drive home the point that we have to control illegal immigration."

Asked if Trump, who is now neck and neck with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for first place in the polls, can win the GOP nomination, King is skeptical.

"I would say no," he told Malzberg.
