Michael Caputo, a communications aide for the Trump campaign ahead of the 2016 election, clarified to Newsmax TV he did cooperate with House investigators when they asked for documents — and then turned down their offer to answer questions in person.
During an appearance on Thursday's "America Talks Live," Caputo was asked about a report claiming he did not cooperate with the House Judiciary Committee after its chairman, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., launched a probe into President Donald Trump's background.
"My attorney complied immediately . . . within 24 hours," Caputo said. "Our answer was, 'I have none of the documents that you requested.' They asked me about things that I was nowhere near and I have no idea about. So [my attorney] said, 'we don't have any documents.'"
Caputo noted a senior staffer on the Judiciary panel then furthered the debate by asking if Caputo would voluntarily sit with the committee to answer questions.
"My attorney [Dennis Vacco], who was New York state attorney general, he's no new guy, he said, 'are you kidding me? He doesn't have any of the documents, he's a marginal player in all of this, he's testified twice before Congress and once before [special counsel] Robert Mueller, and you want him to come in again?'" Caputo said.
"They said, 'We may. If we would, we would like him to do it voluntarily.' My attorney said, 'I'm not gonna agree to that.'"
