History Channel Star: Being Nerd Key to My Success

By    |   Tuesday, 14 October 2014 05:51 PM EDT

Rick Harrison, star of "Pawn Stars" on the History Channel, credits his success to being "the world's biggest nerd."

"When I was 8 years old I started reading some kids' history books and the next thing you know it mushroomed," Harrison said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"[I'm] reading like three, four hours a night every night my entire life and it's everything from science books to physics books, very little fiction, and I turned into this nerd.

"I don't watch television so don't ask me anything about popular culture."

That gap has caused some awkward moments with his kids.

"A few months ago, Maroon 5 was coming to town — I had no idea who they were," Harrsion said.

"My daughter was like, 'can we please meet him' and I'm like, 'is he something special?' I mean, who is Adam Levine?"

Harrison, co-owner of the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, which is located two miles from the Las Vegas Strip, can sometimes be cursed out by customers who think he's undervaluing their goods.

But they shouldn't mess with him too much — Harrison is a boxer in his spare time.

"I box like three, four, five days a week with Floyd Mayweather's sparring partners," Harrison said, referring to the undefeated, Michigan-born fighter who's a five-division world champion and winner of ten world titles.
